2023 Honda Type R Review

Compared to its outrageously styled predecessor, the 2023 Honda Civic Type R's look is more restrained, but it doesn't make it any less thrilling to drive. The Civic Type R, which is exclusively available as a hatchback, is based on the more refined 11th-generation Civic, which is examined individually. The new Civic Type R has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with the same output settings as the previous model, but with 315 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The six-speed manual transmission of the front-wheel-drive Type R has been strengthened to handle the added power. It also has an improved brake cooling system that allows the vehicle to withstand the abuse of track days.

The new Civic Type R is made in Japan with an Ohio-sourced motor, but it's enjoyable to drive everywhere in between. The Honda Civic Type R made our list of the 10 best vehicles for 2023 because we were so thrilled with it.

What to know about Honda Type R

The next Honda hatchback wants to deliver the same enjoyment as the previous model, but with greater power and sexier appearance. Although the new CTR's chassis is bigger, its muscles have expanded to fit smaller 19-inch wheels with wider Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Additionally, it has wider front and rear tracks which enhances brake cooling.

The CTR's revised 315 hp turbocharged 2 liter engine and a up to six-speed manual transmission produce nine more horsepower and 15 more pound-feet of torque. Since the lap recording and performance instrumentation can now be accessible via the car's 9.0-inch infotainment display, you no longer need a smartphone app for the onboard data logger.

Cost of Honda Type R

The price of the Honda Civic Type R is as competitive as its performance. Not only is the CTR less expensive than the Volkswagen Golf R, but it has almost the same price as the base Toyota Supra because there aren't many options available after its initial MSRP. The most potent Civic Type R is ultimately an inexpensive sports car with five doors. You will personally have to decide whether you want two seats or four.

The expense of all that excellent stuff necessitates a higher starting price than the previous model. However, there is only one trim option, and it is completely loaded. The car’s attributes is just so excellent that it even feels reasonable at around $40,000.

Performance - Engine, Transmission, and Other

Similar to the previous model's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, the new Civic Type R's engine produces 315 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 310 pound-feet of torque between 2600 and 4000 rpm thanks to a revised turbocharger and more effective exhaust system. Additional upgrades for the Civic Type R include a bigger radiator and better brake cooling.

In order to enhance the four-cylinder symphony of the vehicle, Honda has also raised the rpm in such a way that the active exhaust valve opens. Rowing at the new CTR's six-speed manual transmission should be made more rewarding by a lighter flywheel and an improved rev-match system. Torque steer is effectively reduced by the Honda's revolutionary dual-axis strut front suspension, which is only available in front-drive models.

The new Civic Type R doesn't have the same radical styling as the previous model, but it still has a large back wing, other aerodynamic additions, and 19-inch wheels shod with gripping Michelin Pilot Sport 4S performance tires. The CTR accelerated to 60 mph on our test track in 4.9 seconds and passed the quarter-mile mark at 106 mph in 13.5 seconds. Its round around our skidpad at 1.02 g's was even more amazing.

Fuel efficiency and actual MPG

According to the EPA, the slight increase in horsepower found in the 2017 Civic Type R doesn't come at the expense of fuel efficiency. Cool EPA estimates for the hot hatch's city and highway mileage are 22 mpg and 28 mpg, respectively. When equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, it matches the EPA figure for the all-wheel-drive Golf R, but the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gives the Golf R an advantage with an additional 2 mpg on the interstate. Once we've assessed the Type R's real-world mpg on our 75 mph highway fuel-economy route as part of our rigorous testing process, we'll update this section.

Cargo, Comfort, and the Interior

The inside of the 2017 Civic Type R is more basic than the one it replaces, but it still boasts plenty of sexy visual cues. The latter has faux carbon fiber trim, red highlights, and the same comfortable and well placed front seats. Before burning your palm on the aluminum gear knob, be mindful of the surrounding temperature. A row of shift light indications are located on top of the new digital cluster to help prevent bumping against the redline in between shifts. Because the Civic Type R has the same amount of passenger and cargo space as the standard Civic hatchback, it should be a fantastic dual-purpose vehicle.
